Detailed 6 Days Rwanda Safari Tour

Day 1: Morning Kigali City Tour and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, embark on a morning city encounter. On this half day tour, the option from visiting the Gisozi genocide memorial to the presidential palace museum where the remains of presidential plane FALCON 50 lay in pieces, the craft centers, Natural History Museum among other attractions.

You will rest for lunch after which you will embark on the transfer to volcanoes National Park 116 kms about 3 hours drive from Kigali city.

The drive en route will expose you to magical scenic views of land thousand hills before arriving in Volcanoes in the evening for overnight. You will have lunch en route to Volcanoes National Park

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking

This is a very busy yet exciting day. You will have to wake up extra earlier to plan yourself, have lunch and have to carry lots of water for the long trek. By 8: 00, you have to be at the park headquarters – for briefing.

They will hand you a park ranger guide to help you on the search for Gorilla. They allocate you a family of gorillas and so you have to trek to find it and if with special cases the ranger can be consulted for special arrangements.

You will head off to the volcanic lush vegetation in search of gorillas. The trek is quite thrilling as you go through amazing landscapes amidst birds’ sight and other wildlife crossing including monkeys, wild pigs, and if lucky wild elephants.

The trek takes 2-8 hours as gorillas are unpredictable thus packed lunch is required. The jungle sound will accompany you up to that long-waited moment of direct contact with gorillas.

You will see them as they forage, play socialize, and sometimes charge. The state of wonder that will engulf your heart could leave your camera film with no space for other encounters.

The full one hour is enough to optimize this experience after which you will retreat to the starting point then drive back to your lodge to relax and refreshen.

If time permits, you can for caves walk in the evening to wonder about the structure of these natural houses or you can opt to visit the Iby’ iwachu cultural village to encounter the culture of the Banyarwanda

Day 3: Hike Dian Fossey Hike and Transfer to Lake Kivu

After an early breakfast, embark on to the hike to Dian Fossey center to pay tribute to one of the gorilla conservationists the world is proud to have had.

This American primatologist championed the conservation of this critically endangered mountain gorillas.

The Karisoke center is located at a raised landscape this involves a relative hike but less strenuous. The grace of the silverback digit is also seen at this center.

This activity takes 3-4 hours. You will then return to the lodge for lunch after which you will embark on the transfer to lake Kivu- Gisenyi 110km about 2 hours’ drive. On the arrival you will go for an evening boat cruise or relax at lake Kivu beaches

Day 4: Drive to Nyungwe National Park

After an early breakfast, embark on the drive to Nyungwe forest National Park 294km about 6-7hours’ drive. You will pass the green hillside of western Rwanda with lunch stop en route.

Driving most of this journey along Lake Kivu is one of those enjoyable things on this safari. Arrive in the afternoon, check in at your hotel and freshen and relax, later have dinner and overnight

Day 5: Chimpanzee Trekking and Nyungwe Canopy Walk

After an early breakfast, embark on the chimpanzee experience. This is another yet an exciting day of your trip yet tiresome so you have to plan well before you leave our room.

At around 8: 00 am, you will set off to the montane forest of Nyungwe which is praised to be among those few forests that survived the last ice age in search of a man’s close relative- the common chimpanzee.

The 2-5 hours trek is very interesting as it involves passing through the jungle, hiking steep landscapes, and descending on the same terrain amidst bird sights and other wildlife including the monkeys.

Upon encountering chimpanzees, you will marvel at their intelligent tactics, how they gather fruits, swing in tree branches, socialize and their general characteristics for one full hour.

After this, you will return to the lodge for relaxation. In the afternoon, you embark on the rewarding Nyungwe canopy walk that takes you through the views of the Nyungwe forest canopy that is filled with birds and primate species like monkeys. Day 6: Transfer Back to Kigali City

After an early breakfast, embark on the drive to the Kigali city 268km about 6 hours’ drive excluding stops en route.

You will stop en route at Butare for lunch and visit Nyanza palace Butare ethnographic museum after which you continue with your drive to Kigali city to your hotel or transfer to the airport for your flight back

Volcanoes National Park

King’s Palace Museum

Situated in Nyanza ya Butare district, presently known as Huye, this history laden site was constructed in 1932. It is a traditional stead with an unmistakable tinge of modernism to it, and a blend of these makes this place a must visit place for all tour enthusiast

This ethnographic museum encapsulates a great deal of Rwandan monarchial history, which sort of rule was abolished after Rwanda’s independence from their colonial masters.

In its backyard, the cattle that formerly belonged to the monarchy are tended to, and their lineage has been maintained even after the abolishment of the kingdom that rewarded them as a great source of prestige

These cattle, which have a striking resemblance plus some genes of the famous Ankole long-horned cattle of Uganda, have one intriguing attribute.

From the time they are mere calves, they are nurtured to listen to their voice of their herdsmen, and these sing them soothing songs and take care of them like the precious jewels they are.

Nyungwe Rain Forest National Park

park stretches from Lake Albert to the Lake Tanganyika and the rift has many mountains and lakes that flow west into congo River system.

The Albertine rift besides having an amazing landscape is also known to its endemic species of fauna and flora. In the Nyungwe forest there are about 1,068 plant species and 248 species of orchids and other new species are being found each year.

Also, about 85 mammal species are found in Nyungwe, including 13 primates’ species. Nyungwe accommodates over 300 bird species, 29 species of them are endemics to Albertine rift this makes Nyungwe the best Ornithologist’s best site, as many are it a birders paradise.

The biodiversity of the park is even further enriched by other landscapes including swamps, marshes, bamboo thicket, heath, open woodland and many microhabitats.

Nyungwe is known to its 13 primate species including the famous chimpanzees, this is the best site for chimps trekking and also the largest troop of the black and white colobus monkeys.

After all activities in the park there is also fragmented forests including cyamudongo home of the well-habituated chimpanzees and also Gisakura has other fragmented forests where the second habituated small troops of the colobus monkeys live.

Nyungwe forest has over 130km of constructed trails, which allows all travelers of the different fitness levels to enjoy its beauty

Presidential Museum

This palace, now known to be a museum, is located in the outskirts of Kigali city; in the eastern side. It was known to be the residence of the Rwandan president before the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. Prior to this tragedy, the palace had housed two Rwandan presidents plus their families

A visit to this historically noteworthy palace you an insight into the tragedy happened on April 6th 1994, when president juvenal Habyarimana’s plane was gunned down. Unfortunately, he was in the company of the Burundian president, who did not survive either

It contains debris from this catastrophic occurrence which gave impetus to the already mentioned 1994 stain In Rwanda’s history, whereby the embittered Tutsi and Hutus wielded pangas plus other deadly tools at each other, massacring everyone who crossed their path; young or old, male or female, innocent or guilty

Besides the alluring history behind this palace, there are some features about it that are worth seeing. These include the various fruit trees in the compound, the art piece that was gifted to the then president, plus the lavish nature of this democide which has become a much sought-after museum for most history lover.
