1 Day visit to Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage

Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage Day Tour, David Sheldrick elephant orphanage, Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage Nairobi. Best known for our work to protect elephants, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the world. But we do much more than this.

The Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program and is one of the pioneering conservation organizations for wildlife and habitat protection in East Africa.

On-call every day of the year, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust travels throughout Kenya to rescue orphaned elephants and rhinos left alone with no hope of survival. Many of the orphans rescued are victims of poaching and human-wildlife conflict and are in a terrible state of emaciation and distress.

After each orphan rescue, the long and complex process of rehabilitation begins at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Nursery nestled within the Nairobi National Park.

For milk-dependent elephant calves it is here, during this crucial phase, where they are cared for and healed both emotionally and physically by the DSWT’s dedicated team of elephant Keepers who take on the role and responsibility of becoming each orphan’s adopted family during their rehabilitation.)

The lead caretaker will take you through each and every baby elephant’s life history and the circumstances under which they were abandoned in the wild. Some of these stories are heart-wrenching like one that was abandoned and had had her trunk and tail chewed off by hyenas before she could be rescued by the Wildlife service.

You will learn a lot about the challenges of wildlife conservation from this talk and see the magnitude of the problem by the ever-increasing numbers of orphaned babies. And these are the few that they can reach in time.
