Detailed 10 Day Mount Rwenzori Hiking Safari Uganda Wildlife Tour to Queen Elizabeth National Park

Day 1: Transfer to Kasese via Queen Elizabeth National Park

After an early breakfast early in the morning, your guide driver will be at your hotel to pick you up, he will brief you about the trip and the activities of the day.

After the brief, you will hit the through the west on the Masaka road towards the Queen Elizabeth National Park.

The first stop will be to see the royal drum makers, about an hour outside of Kampala. Next stop is at the spot somewhere at the equator crosses.

Here you will have a photo moment so you can take as many pictures as you can. You may opt for a cup of coffee before you embark on the road.

The next stop is an en route lunch in Mbarara. Descending through Queen Elizabeth National Park, for a drive through afternoon game drive. You will arrive in Kasese mid afternoon

Day 2: Climb to Nyabitaba through Bakojo Homestead

On the second day of your 10 Days of Mount Rwenzori Hiking Safari and wildlife tour in Queen Elizabeth National Park, you will have an early breakfast and depart from the Nyakalengija trailhead at 7 am.

Proceed to the Nyakalengija trailhead (1,600 meters) to make the final arrangements for the porters and a guide.

After a short briefing, the guests will begin hiking to nyabitaba hut, walking through the banana gardens on the side of the steep foothills.

The trail passes many typical bakonjo tribe homesteads; many children waving at you. The trail follows the Mubuku River through the steep hills and over the Mahoma River, one climbs steeply through the fern-covered slopes and Podocarpus forest, finally reaching the Nyabitaba hut, the first overnight spot

Arrive at the nyabitaba hut early afternoon (elevation: 2,650 meters)

Lunch will be either en route in the forest or at the hut, depending on how the hike progresses

Day 3: The Trail from Nyabitaba Hut to John Matte Hut

You will have an early breakfast at around 7:00 am then continue the hike from Nyabitaba hut down through the forest to the Kurt Shafer Bridge, just below the confluence of the Bujuku and Mubuku rivers.

Then a steep ascent through the Bamboo forest, across along and possibly exhausting stretch of slippery moss-covered rock, reaching the Nyamileju rock shelter.

From here on a clear day, one can glimpse Mount Stanley and mount Speke. One then passes through a zone of giant heather, lobelia and groundsel. Then the final stretch across the tiring bog area; one of many in this mountain trail

Lunch and dinner at the John Matte hut, where the guests will spend a night

Day 4: Enter the Lower Bigo Bog

Early breakfast probably by 7 am before the start.

The trail drops immediately after leaving the John Matte Hut. One crosses the Bujuku River and enters lower Bigo Bog, home to the giant leobelians.

Jumping from tussock to tussock, the bog is finally crossed between the tussocks, one usually gets very cold wet feet from the ooze below the short grasses.

The upper Big Bog then gives away Bujuku Lake. Here one can see mount Bakers to the south and Mount Stanley to the west.

Bujuku Hut is a narrow valley below Steinmann pass, in the shadows of mountains Baker and Speke. Although a most spectacular setting, this area can be very cold, even for Rwenzorians

Day 5: Mount Stanley

This fifth day of your 10 Day Mount Rwenzori Hiking Safari Uganda Wildlife Tour to Queen Elizabeth National Park, you will have an early breakfast by around 7: 00 am, the trail continues from Bujuku, through more bog, climbing the steep slopes west of the lake.

One passes through the magical groundsels gully as it ascends to Scott-Elliot pass, elevation is 4,372 meters.

Metal ladder at the head of the gully, take you over a steep section; after which the trail splits into two.

The right fork leads up to Elena Hut and Mount Stanley on a steep trail over many large boulders. The left fork leads you to Scott-Elliot pass and down to Kitandara Lake

Lunch and dinner at Elena Hut. Overnight will be a cold night in the hut

Day 6: Climbing the Summit of Mount Margherita

Breakfast will be earlier than the usual. You need to have your breakfast as early as 6: 00 am

For those climbing to the peak of the mount Margherita which is (5,109) continue on the path to the base of the Stanley Glacier.

Depending on the weather and the individual’s acclimatization, it can be a four to seven hour walk to the summit of Margherita.

This is a tough walk over three Glaciers, slippery rock, ice and very exposed areas which are open on many sides.

It is only for the physically fit and is technical climb which requires roping up, crampons and appropriate equipment for cold, windy and icy conditions.

It is best to attempt the final climb in a minimum group of 4; two climbers and two guides; (a supplement for an extra guide has to be paid for at that time of booking).

Climb on the glacier, across the Stanley plateau and proceed with ascent. The time taken will be subject to altitude, sickness, fog and weather conditions, this is the final ascent to the summit of margherita, the crown of the Rwenzori.

Due to the altitude and tough conditions not, everyone will make it to the summit so do not be disappointed if you do not.

(For those who do not wish to climb the peak, an easier walking trail from Elena Hut to Kitandara Hut (4,023) is available

The descend begins returning to Scott- Elliot pass. Here there are spectacular views en route to Bujuku Lake and Mount Speke, and then up to Mount Stanley and down again to the Kitandara Lakes.

Once over the pass the trail enters an alpine zone of sparse vegetation and rough boulders. Descend to the Kitandara Hut for overnight just past the Kitandara Lakes

Day 7: Climb Mt Stanley

As a norm, wake up as early as possible, prepare yourself and take breakfast. By 7: 00 am, begin the hike.

Follow the trail to guy Yeoman Hut (3260 m) from Kitandara, the trail ascends steeply up. The head wall spreading out from the base of Mount Baker and continuing along the south side of the mountain to fresh field pass.

On a clear day there are views into the Congo to the west and Mount Stanley to the north. From the pass, the long muddy descend continues, passing the rock shelter at Bujangolo

Day 8: Climb Mount Nyabitaba

Breakfast as usual very early in the morning and by 7: 00 am your good to start

Continue to the path; the descent can be slippery and muddy with little to hold on to and requires careful balancing over the vertical mud and steep rock.

The Nyabiaba Hut (2,650 meters) is a pleasant rest after the exertion o the previous days

Day 9: Game Viewing in Queen Elizabeth National Park

After breakfast at 7: 00 am you will start. Continue to the trail to the Nyakalengija trailhead (1,600 M). Gentle descend down the muddy paths to the trailhead arriving late morning

After lunch, drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park, game drive on the way

In the afternoon, time allowing, a boat cruise at the Kazinga channel where you will spot the Buffalos, hippos, crocodiles and elephants.

You will also spot array of birds that came to drink water. You will return to the lodge and have dinner and overnight

Day 10: Game Drive and Transfer Back to Kampala

After an early breakfast, you will have an early morning game drive spot some animals like the elephants, antelopes, Uganda kobs, lion, buffalo etc.

You will also spot many species of birds. After the game drive, you will return to your lodge and check out.
